Proje Özeti

This project challenges the status quo in higher education, asking institutions to address the social determinants of education in Ireland. By critically examining who has access to third level, under what conditions, and how systemic inequalities are reinforced through curriculum and learning environments, the project seeks to transform pedagogy, space, and educator training to foster genuine inclusion.  It will develop research-driven, community-led interventions that reframe curriculum, reimagine learning spaces, and redesign training for educators to support historically marginalised communities, including Travellers, individuals with intellectual disabilities, refugees, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and mature learners with caregiving responsibilities.

At the core of this initiative is a radical design justice methodology—a commitment to systems thinking, co-designing, prototyping, and embedding community-led, evidence-based, trauma-informed and scalable interventions. Through piloting scalable programmes and exploring business models for broader implementation, the project will ensure its solutions are embedded, transferable, and sustainable beyond the life of the research. This project directly aligns with the MTU RISE call objectives, strengthening MTU’s research and innovation ecosystem (Strategic Plan Theme 3), fostering multidisciplinary collaboration across academic departments (Applied Social Studies, Architecture, Media Communications, Music, Sports, Leisure & Childhood Studies), research centres (Nimbus), and administrative departments (Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), Access Service), and developing tangible research outputs to enhance institutional and national policy on access and inclusion. By embedding these priorities within MTU’s regional and national impact agenda, this research will position MTU as a leader in inclusive educational transformation, generating lasting scientific, societal, and economic change.
