Abstract
Climate change is a significant issue that defines our era. The negative impacts of climate change bring significant social, economic, and environmental consequences. The use of artificial intelligence to combat these consequences is increasing, and many applications are being implemented in various fields. The United Nations identifies the two most important strategies for combating climate change as greenhouse gas reduction and adaptation to the current and potential impacts of climate change. The use of artificial intelligence offers significant opportunities for decision-makers and researchers to improve existing understanding and practices in both greenhouse gas reduction and adaptation, and to identify different perspectives and strategies. However, artificial intelligence systems also raise new social and ethical issues in these processes and lead to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions. This, in turn, makes the use of artificial intelligence a contributing factor to the exacerbation of climate change, harming human health and all living things. The purpose of this study is to assess the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence in combating climate change. The study concluded that the use of artificial intelligence significantly supports climate change mitigation and adaptation activities in the context of energy use, environmental impacts and carbon footprint, and if it can be managed ethically.
