Özet

The practice of readers' representative has become common recently in media establishments and especially in newspapers all over the world. The first readers' representative was appoin ted to Asahi Shimbun in Tokyo in 1922 and today, the number of media establishments that have a readers' representative is about one hundred. In this study, which examines the development of readers' representation both in Turkey and in the world, the roots of the term ombudsman were examined in order to explain the readers' representation better. Then, self-control function fulfilled by the readers' representative and his bridging role between the readers and the newspaper was dealt with. Later on, historical development of readers' representation both in Turkey and in the world was told. Finally, the establishment aims of The Organization of News Ombudsmen and their works are explained and the importance of readers' representation for media as a self-control institute was underlined.
