Abstract

The aim of this research is to fabricate and characterize alumina (Al2O3) / lanthanum titanate (La2Ti2O7) laminate ceramic composites. The interfacial bond between oxide laminates has a critical effect on the final mechanical properties (ie. fracture toughness) of composites. Hot forged Al2O3 and La2Ti2O7 laminated composites were prepared and then characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and wavelength dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (WDS). An intermediate phase was found to form at the interface was identified as Al2O5.
