Abstract

This article examines the professional anxieties of Turkish journalists in relation to their age, gender, educational level, and employment conditions. Drawing on a survey of 374 journalists, the findings reveal that job insecurity is most prevalent among 20–33-year-olds and negatively impacts emotional and mental well-being. Despite their high level of education, young journalists face precarious employment. Although female journalists are more highly educated than their male colleagues, they remain in the profession for shorter periods, reflecting persistent gender-based barriers. A negative correlation was found between income and job-loss anxiety, with lower-paid journalists reporting greater concern. Overall, the results suggest that journalism in Turkey has become structurally precarious, exposing young and female journalists to heightened vulnerability. The article argues for policies that promote secure employment and equality and calls for inter-institutional cooperation, including among public bodies, universities, and professional associations, to strengthen formal and informal safeguards for journalists.
