Abstract
In this article, we will explore Nietzsche's concept of "perspectivism" in conjunction with
Heidegger’s concept of "World," using Akira Kurosawa's cinema film Rashomon as a lens. In doing
so, we will elucidate and interpret a concept that may be read as the essence of Nietzsche's
philosophy and as even relevant today—namely, perspectivism. Additionally, we will demonstrate
how Heidegger's concept of "World" can be understood through Nietzsche's perspectivism and
retell it in Nietzsche's perspectivist language. Furthermore, we will reveal how the film Rashomon
visually engages with these philosophical themes, deepening them with new questions and creating
an example of “video-philosophy.” In line with these objectives, in the first section, we will explain
what Nietzsche's perspectivism is and distinguish it from relativistic understandings in the form of
"anything goes." In the second section, we will examine how Heidegger investigates the concept of
"World" and demonstrate why the idea of "being-in-the-World" aligns with Nietzsche's
perspectivism. Finally, we will examine examples of these two concepts together through the
“phenomenology of testimony,” which we argue is depicted in the film Rashomon and we will
explore how the film directs the philosophical discussion through the perspectives it introduces.
