Özet

This chapter offers a clear overview of the essential concepts and skills of interpersonal communication, highlighting the importance of effective communication within the demanding work schedule of doctors, their stressful work environment, and their direct involvement with patients. It explores the key communication elements of the doctor-patient relationship, including active listening, empathy, and respect. Additionally, it emphasizes the crucial role of language, tone, and body language in communication. The chapter presents various techniques and skills that doctors can use to improve their communication abilities. It begins by examining the challenging nature of a physician's career, focusing on long work hours, high stress levels, and the constant demands of patient care. It then highlights the importance of effective communication for doctors, stressing its role in building rapport with patients, collaborating with colleagues, and managing stress. The chapter also introduces fundamental communication concepts, emphasizing self-awareness and the importance of self-image. Additionally, it examines how defense mechanisms influence communication and self-image development. The "5N1K of Communication" model is introduced, outlining the elements of a message (i.e., what, to whom, why, where, when, and how). The chapter highlights the importance of considering the three dimensions of a message: lexical, emotional, and behavioral. It emphasizes key communication skills such as first impressions, connecting with others, active listening, empathy, saying "no," and managing complaints.
