Özet

Marbles, like all calcareous rocks, are sensitive to acidic chemicals and bad weather conditions and are degraded. Especially acid rain is one of the most important agents of marble structures and works. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), the main component of the marble, is insoluble in water. However, acids in acid rain can convert CaCO3 into soluble salts by chemical reactions. This leads to the formation of holes in the surfaces of the structures due to the loss of material, the surface wear and color changes. In this context, in order to protect many structures, monuments and sculptures from environmental wear, the number of studies to develop acid-resistant coatings that do not contain porosity on marble is increasing rapidly. In this study, in order to protect the marbles from environmental factors, the scientific researches about the coating of the surfaces with dense hydroxyapatite (HA) were evaluated.

Keywords: marble, acid rain, historical structures, hydroxyapatite coatings.
