Özet

Debussy is considered to be among the musicians of the Romantic Period and the 20th century transition and is also seen among the impressionist and symbolist musicians. The composer's musical identity was of course influenced by all these periods and movements, and while he was influenced by the dominant artistic trends of his period, he managed to give direction to art with his originality in his journey to discover his own musical identity over time. Claude Debussy's String Quartet is considered an important work that contains the reflections of impressionism and symbolism movements in music. This research aims to evaluate the quartet conceptually on the basis of these two art movements. For this purpose, the characteristics of impressionism and symbolism art movements are defined, and the researches made on String Quartet Op. 10 are examined. An attempt is made to determine the direction of the work in the current repertoire based on the characteristics of art movements. It is understood that Debussy was influenced by the impressionism movement and introduced harmonic innovations and adopted atmospheric narrative techniques; and he adopted abstract images and an intuitive understanding of creating meaning from the symbolism movement. The composer's music went beyond the classical quartet form and became one of the pioneers of 20th century music.
