Abstract
In the last quarter of the 21st century, game design has become an art form that combines
coding, visual arts, sound, and storytelling. Unlike high-budget studios, independent studios
(indie studios) have taken risks not only to give games a stylized visual identity but also to
enhance the connection with users by adding atmosphere and emotion to the games they design.
Although the contributions of independent game studios to the industry have been increasingly
proven, there are few academic studies on the impact of their contributions on the player
experience and how they shape the industry. This study examines the ways in which
independent game studios shape current design trends in the industry, focusing on topics such
as unique style and form, with the aim of addressing a gap in the literature. The methods used
include descriptive analysis and visual document analysis, which are qualitative research
methods. The sample includes Supergiant Games’ Bastion, Transistor, and Hades productions,
and the use of color, aesthetic narrative integrity, and the place of graphic design in game design
in these productions are examined.
