Abstract

Multiculturality and cultural prejudice: The role of some psychological dynamics on cultural prejudice among university students.

Prejudice is a highly significant concept in terms of social peace and individual psychological health. Given that Türkiye is a cosmopolitan and multicultural country where different ethnicities and cultures coexist, and especially considering the influx of many individuals from various nations in recent years, it has become increasingly important for individuals to interact with each other free from cultural prejudice. In this study I aimed to investigate the levels of cultural/ethnic prejudice and some of its psychological dynamics among university students, who constitute a relatively diverse and mixed community in terms of different cultural and/or ethnic backgrounds. The primary objective of this study was to develop a scale (Cultural Prejudice Scale-CPS) to measure cultural and ethnic prejudice among university students. In line with this objective, exploratory factor analysis conducted with a sample of 512 university students revealed  a four-facto 22- item scale that explain 62% of the total variance.  Besides the main objective of the study, the developed scale will be used to determine the levels of cultural/ethnic prejudice among university students, and a hypothetical model suggesting that inferiority feelings predict prejudice through self-esteem will be tested. Data cellection process and studies related to confirmatory factor analysis of the CPS, measuring the levels of cultural prejudice of the üniversity students,  and testing the hypothetic model are ongoing.

Key Words: Cultural pejudice, inferiority feeling, self esteem.
