Özet

All individuals with special needs in Türkiye receive out-of-school support education services from Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers (SERCs). In recent years, the number of studies on SERCs has increased remarkably. The studies generally focus on the problems encountered in the supportive education activities offered in SERCs, and the participants are teachers. In most studies, conducting research in which institution administrators are participants is recommended. In this context, there is a need for this study to examine the process of providing supportive education activities in SERCs from the perspective of institution administrators. The study examines the experiences and opinions of special education and rehabilitation center administrators regarding the support education services offered. The study was conducted with phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs. The study participants consisted of 5 administrators working in special education and rehabilitation centers for at least three years. Data were collected through interviews, a researcher’s diary, and documents. After content analysis, the data were grouped under five main themes. The themes are functioning, education and training activities, employment, cooperation, expectations, and suggestions. As a result, administrators generally stated that they encountered problems in the institution’s functioning, had difficulties in the diagnosis and guidance process, and had trouble finding qualified personnel. They could not ensure continuity and had financial problems, which negatively affected the education and training process. Based on the administrators’ experiences, they perceive that support education services activities can improve with sufficient qualified personnel and financial support.
