Prosody is the study of the sound characteristics of a language in different forms of expression, such as speech, writing, and music. Music prosody, in particular, involves the harmonious transfer of elements such as syllable length, stress, and pauses to the composition in a way that is consistent with the meaning and rhythm of the poem. The correct use of prosody rules ensures that the composed work is consistent both linguistically and musically. In this context, matching short syllables with short notes, long syllables with long notes, placing accents in the right places, and determining the correct pauses are of great importance. The aim of this study is to examine the prosodic problems encountered in the composition of Yunus Emre's poems and to guide composers on the correct use of prosody. The works that constitute the sample of this study, which aims to contribute to increasing the importance given to prosody in Turkish music composition and establishing a healthier relationship between poetry and music, are six works that participated in the “Yunus Emre Poems Turkish Folk Music Composition Competition” organized by the Eskişehir Odunpazarı Municipality in 2006. Ahmet Hatipoğlu's prosody analysis steps were used in the analysis of the works. The findings show that prosody errors are common in the analyzed compositions in terms of syllable length, stress, and elision. It was determined that all of the poems examined were written in syllabic meter, that four of the six works assigned an octave unit value to open (short) syllables, that prosodic errors were made in all of the works in terms of short (open) and long (closed) syllables and stress, and that only one work contained errors in terms of pause. It was also determined that the appropriate style and mode were chosen for the lyrics of all works. In conclusion, the study revealed that sufficient attention was not paid to prosody in the composition of Yunus Emre's poems in the form of folk songs. Recommendations were made to composers regarding syllable lengths, stresses, and pauses for new compositions, emphasizing that more high-quality works could be produced by paying attention to the harmony between poetry and music.
