Abstract

The management and maintenance of public services, such as ground water and storm water utilities, need up-to-date data. Few basemaps and high-resolution images are available in Saudi Arabia and what is available is largely out of date. The authors developed and implemented a GIS-based facility management system for ground water and storm water utilities in Riyadh Community, Saudi Arabia. All available paper maps had to be digitised and augmented with the results of a GPS campaign in which manholes and gullies, over 35,000 in total, had to be surveyed.
