Abstract

The Turkish glass industry, ranked among the first rows in the world, makes every type of production from bottle glass to the flat glass. Nevertheless, there is not any recycling plan related with window glass (soda lime glass). In this study, a patented dry production method of glass foam was explained that consists of crushing and grinding waste window glasses, mixing natural foaming agents, placing the mixtures into the molds, 3 phased sintering process and sizing of final product. As a result of more than 120 test samples, 6 different types of industrial scaled glass foam were obtained with combinations of foaming agents and waste glass powders. Thus, not only waste management is carried out but also cost is to be reduced. All products have internationally valid TSE approved A1 class non-combustibility certificate. The products providing heat, sound and water insulation at the same time with a single material that can be used in facing works, production of decorative aesthetic elements and insulation of fittings within industrial scale. An economic glass foam was produced successfully with high mechanical properties as well as a foaming procedure at quite low temperatures.
