Özet

Jews have made an important contribution to the music around the world and in this context are the Jews of Spanish and Portuguese origin who spread throughout the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, parts of South America, Italy and Holland after their expulsion at the end of the fifteenth century. The members or descendants of Jews that lived in Spain and Portugal – called Sephardi – carried the essence of their culture through the centuries.  This study investigates examples of how the specific case of the medieval Sephardic song La Prima Vez is reflected in other art manifestations in the twenty-first century.

The transportation of the old song through the history are analyzed in three examples: firstly, in the original song interpreted by Owain Phyfe and The New World Renaissance Band; secondly, in the Pina Bausch’s work Der Fensterputzer seen in the fim ‘Pina’ by Wim Wender; and finally, in the Brazilian composer Willy Correa de Oliveira’s work for piano La Prima Vez written in 2015 and review in 2017. For this purpose, the descriptive analysis was used to summarized and interpret the previously determined theme. The study concludes that the old Sephardic culture has remained alive through the centuries in new artistic developments and in different continents. La Prima Vez is a contemporary proof that music progresses persistently through time and space.
